As we prepare to begin another demanding school year in early childhood education, I want to take a moment to address something that often gets pushed to the bottom of our endless to-do lists: caring for ourselves. Every day, you pour your heart, energy, and expertise into nurturing the youngest learners in our state. You create safe spaces where children can grow, explore, and discover their potential. You support families during their most formative years. You advocate for policies that strengthen our profession and improve outcomes for Arkansas children. This work is both deeply meaningful and incredibly demanding. Yet in our dedication to others, we sometimes forget a fundamental truth: we cannot pour from an empty cup.

The quality of care and education we provide is directly connected to our own well-being and continued growth as professionals. Self-care is not selfish – it’s essential. Whether it’s taking those few minutes each morning with your coffee, scheduling regular time with friends, engaging in physical activity that brings you joy, or simply saying no to one more commitment when your plate is already full, these acts of self-preservation strengthen your capacity to serve others.

Professional development deserves the same priority. Continuing to learn, grow, and challenge ourselves keeps our practice fresh and evidence-based. It reminds us why we entered this field and opens new possibilities for impact. When we invest in our own learning, we model lifelong growth for the children and families we serve.

I encourage each of you to make one commitment to yourself this month. Perhaps it’s attending an affiliate workshop, reading that professional book you’ve been meaning to start, joining a peer support group, or simply establishing a boundary that protects your personal time. Remember, taking care of yourself is not separate from your professional responsibilities – it’s central to them. Our children deserve educators who are healthy, growing, and passionate about their work. That starts with each of us making the choice to invest in ourselves.

Thank you for all you do for Arkansas children and families. You are valued, you are appreciated, and you deserve the same care and attention you give so freely to others.
