Hey y’all! Welcome back to your Advocacy Alphabet with Natasha Kile, your AECA Public Policy Chair. Today, we’re talking about N is for NAEYC.

There is a question I hear from time to time, usually from early childhood professionals who are stretched thin, underpaid, and running on fumes: Why should I pay dues to a professional organization when I can barely pay my own bills?

It is a fair question. And it deserves an honest answer.

Professional organizations like NAEYC and AECA exist because no single educator – no matter how talented, passionate, or committed – can move the needle on early childhood policy alone. The challenges we face are systemic. They are the result of decades of underinvestment, cultural devaluation, and policy decisions made without our input. Solving them requires collective action, unified voice, and sustained presence in the spaces where decisions get made. That is what membership makes possible.

When you join NAEYC, you connect to a national network of over 60,000 early childhood professionals who are working together to advance the field. You gain access to research, resources, and professional development that strengthen your practice. And you add your voice to an organization that testifies before Congress, shapes accreditation standards, and influences the national conversation about what quality early childhood education looks like.

When you engage with AECA, you bring that national momentum home to Arkansas. You connect with colleagues who understand your context, your challenges, and your community. You become part of a statewide advocacy effort that monitors legislation, builds relationships with policymakers, and ensures that the early childhood perspective is present in conversations that affect every program, every educator, and every child in our state.

Membership is not just a transaction. It is a declaration that you believe this field is worth fighting for – and that you are willing to fight alongside others who feel the same way.

We are stronger together than we will ever be alone. That has always been true. It has never been more urgent.
